A large national steel producer was concerned about a problem of controlling their Engineering Drawings. This company had an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 Engineering Drawings that were used by their maintenance department to make repairs on equipment.

There were a couple of problems that needed to be addressed. Their first problem was that finding the drawing sometimes proved to be a real challenge if the drawing was not filed properly. Plus, once they found the drawing, they never knew for sure if they were using the most current version because the drawings were continually being updated by outside engineering firms.

DBM's solution:

We established a database driven application that controls all drawings. When an engineer needs to revise a drawing they log into the system and "sign" it out. When the work on the drawing is completed it is "signed" back in and all the information about the drawing is updated. Now that the automated system is implemented, when work is scheduled for a piece of equipment, all the maintenance personnel has to do is log-in and request a print of the drawing - there is never any time wasted searching for the drawings and they always know they are working with the most current copy.

The system is easy for their employees to manage and update, yet powerful enough to handle thousands of drawings.
